Natural disasters happen and impact your home, family and pets but there are many things you can do to lessen the impacts. The Kalui family knows all about being prepared. They've prepared a household emergency plan. Have an emergency kit with food, water, medication and space clothes. Have an emergency contact list. Know how to turn off the water, power and gas. Have and can use a fire extinguisher.

They've taken out insurance and checked that it covers flooding, fire damage and storm damage, and they've stored important documents. They’ve also prepared their home, cleared the gutters and checked the roofing, trimmed branches, and removed leaf litter, firewood and fuel containers. Next door Mr Jones lives with his cat Meow.

The Kalui family ask Mr Jones if he'd like some help getting prepared for possible severe weather.

Mr Kalui:

Can I help you get prepared for a disaster?

Mr Jones:

Hmm. Maybe another day.

The Logan Early Warning app has sent an alert. A severe storm is headed our way.

Mr Jones:

Doesn't look like it will rain too much. I'm busy watching my favourite show right now.

Mr Kalui:

Yes. I've tied it down so it won't blow away.

Radio:

Reports are suggesting that the worst of the storm has moved out to sea. Residents are advised to stay safe and inside where possible.

Mr Jones are you okay?

Mr Jones:

I can't find Meow.

Cat:

Meow

Mrs Kalui:

Why don't you come next door and join us?

Narrator:

After the storm passes it's time to help each other clean up. Remember, when you're collecting debris watch out for snakes and spiders. Don't touch the fallen powerlines. Make sure you record damage for insurance purposes. Mr Jones is sure he will be better prepared for next time.
