Browns Plains waste and recycling facility

The Browns Plains Waste and Recycling Facility is one of the most advanced and innovative waste facilities in Queensland. It offers both landfill and recycling facilities.

Arriving at the facility

When you arrive at the facility, you will pass through the service areas described below.

Weighbridge

The weighbridge is the entry and exit point for all vehicles. Vehicles are weighed before continuing to the different service areas. Charges apply for general waste.

Recycling centre

The facility has different areas where you can recycle materials to make sure that only ‘true garbage’ goes to the landfill. You can drop off the following materials for recycling:

  • paper and cardboard
  • glass
  • plastic
  • oil
  • car batteries
  • fluorescent tubes
  • rechargeable batteries
  • aluminium
  • household items in good condition that can be sold at the Recycling Market.

Green waste

The facility has a section for garden waste and grass clippings. Green waste is removed from the site and processed by a contractor.

Metal recycling

The facility accepts large steel items such as car bodies, engines, white goods and other metals at the metal recycling area. These items are recycled or resold.

Transfer station

The transfer station accepts items for landfill. By the time you get to the transfer station, all recyclable, reusable and green waste should have been removed from your load. The rest of your load will be taken to the landfill to be buried.

Logan Recycling Market

All items that can be reused are collected at the recycling centre and taken to the Logan Recycling Market. Profits from the Logan Recycling Market are donated to community groups through the City of Logan Mayor’s Trust.

Landfill and the environment

We minimise the risk that landfill poses to our health and the environment by reducing gas emissions, avoiding groundwater contamination and reducing the space used by landfill.

Reducing gas emissions

We collect methane gas through pipes inside the landfill cells and divert it to an on-site power generation plant. At the plant, the methane is converted into energy. The power generated is enough to supply electricity to 2,000 homes.

Avoiding groundwater contamination

When water and other fluids pass through the layers of waste in landfill, they make a liquid called leachate. The Browns Plains Waste and Recycling Facility collects the leachate and pumps it away. A common use for the leachate is to pump it back into a full landfill cell to help speed up waste decomposition.

Reducing space

The Brown Plains Waste and Recycling Facility is designed to reduce the amount of landfill space needed. We achieve this by providing areas where you can recycle materials. This helps to make sure that only ‘true garbage’ goes to landfill.
