Senior Schooling and Pathways

An initiative of the Logan Youth Action Group, the following table lists information about pathways and alternative learning opportunities available to students in Logan.

Here is what our Logan Youth Action Group had to say:

“It is important that during the final years at high school or wherever you are learning, you understand your strengths and what excites you. It is during these years where you start planning and preparing for your future and exploring the pathway that is right for you. The following information will provide you with information to help you in choosing the correct pathway for you if you are in grades 10 to 12.”

Link and Launch

Finished Year 12 but doors aren’t opening?

Link and Launch is a free service designed to help you identify the options that can work for you after school. You’ll be guided through a range of post-school study, training and work options – and if you don’t have any idea what you want to do next, the program can help you with that too.

The program is offered via selected Queensland high schools. The program is run on school sites but is separate from the school.

ATAR

The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is the number which determines a students entry into university.

The number is between 0.00 and 99.95 and ranks a student against all the students in their age group.

Good to know - Units of Study

Your ATAR is determined by your performance in Units 3 and 4 (which are performed in grade 12) of either five general subjects or 4 general subjects plus 1 applied subject, or a Certificate III-level or higher in completed VET.

Admission to most tertiary courses is determined by your selection rank, which is comprised of your ATAR plus any necessary adjustments.

Universities use the ATAR to help them choose students for their courses. Most universities also select students based on factors. This may include personal statement, a questionnaire, a portfolio of work, an audition, an interview or a test.

Prerequisites

If you as a student are looking into an educational pathway after you finish high school, you will need to know what course of study you want to do, and the prerequisites required for that course.

It is important to understand what these requirements are as they will enable you to peruse in the career you want. The prerequisites of a course will often require a specific ATAR and require you have completed specific

subjects. Although this may seem quite overwhelming you are able to find out the prerequisites of your chosen course on your chosen university’s website.

Enabling Programs and Bridging Studies

What if I do not attain the prerequisites needed for my chosen course?

What if I have not completed one of the required subjects for my chosen course?

Although it is both useful and important to choose the right subjects for grade 11 and 12, you are still able to complete the required units of the subject after you finish high school or during your final year of schooling through a bridging course.

If are not already aware, bridging courses provide students with the fundamental skills required to pathway into further education, either through a higher-level TAFE qualification or university (TAFE, 2022). These courses will enable you to obtain the subject prerequisite if you do not already have it.

Scholarships and financial assistance

It is important to understand that university and other post-graduate courses of study come with a financial cost. If you currently hold one of the following visas you are eligible to receive HECS support from the Australian government.

  • Australian Citizen
  • New Zealand Special Category Visa
  • Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder

The Australian government offers loans with low interest rates called HECS or HECS-HELP.

The government pays your institution directly for your tuition fees. You must begin repaying your debt once you graduate and reach a certain income level.

If you currently are not eligible for HECS or HESCS-HELP, there is no need to worry! Many different universities both in Queensland and across the entirely of Australia provide a great variety of scholarships ranging from academic performance, sporting achievements, to the arts.

To find out how to apply for these scholarships it is important to visit your school guidance councillor. Remember that they are professionals in guiding individuals like yourself to obtain their pathway goals.

Please visit HECS support for more information.
TAFE QLD

It is important to understand that there are a multitude of different pathway options that are available to you. Despite university being the most common form of pathway after schooling, other options are available to students, one of which being TAFE.

What is TAFE?

Australia's TAFE system, which is run by the government, offers post-secondary education in vocational fields like beauty, design, childcare, accounting, business, recruitment, IT, and many more.

University courses cover a wide range of theoretical topics, whereas TAFE courses concentrate on practical skills for a given industry. The skills required to work in aged care, whether at a client's home or an aged care facility, are taught, for instance, in a Certificate IV in Aged Care.

Although more and more courses are becoming available online, TAFE is typically taught at TAFE Institutes all over Australia. There are also options for blended learning, which combines online and in-person instruction.

Please visit TAFE for more information.
Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Logan City Council has a Traineeship and Apprenticeship Program. Our traineeship and apprenticeship program will help you kick start your career in local government and provide you with the training, skills and experience you need for your chosen career.

What is an apprenticeship and/or traineeship?

Apprenticeships and traineeships combine training with working in a real job, with a real boss, for a real wage. Apprentices and trainees work towards the completion of a nationally recognised qualification while learning valuable skills at work and under the guidance of a training organisation. Upon completion, you may find yourself in a great place to keep working, go on to future study; or even start your own business.

What is the difference between a traineeship and an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are trained in a skilled trade (e.g. electrical, plumbing, cabinet making, automotive) and, upon successful completion, become a qualified tradesperson. Apprenticeships generally take up to four years to complete.

Trainees are trained in vocational areas (e.g. business administration, information technology, tourism) and, upon successful completion, receive a qualification in their chosen vocational area. Traineeships generally take between 12 months and 3 years to complete.

If you are looking for an apprenticeship or traineeship service, you can contact one of the below services that will be able to help and provide you with information on other organisations.

For more information on Logan City Council Traineeships and apprenticeships visit Traineeships and apprenticeships.
