Parramatta Road stormwater channel rehabilitation project

Project overview
We are rehabilitating the open stormwater channel east of Kingston Road to Parramatta Road in Underwood, to allow stormwater to drain more easily and help protect people and local properties.
The proposed rehabilitation area is approximately 1,400m² and is surrounded by industrial properties.
The extent of works is focused on the channel itself, with the intent to limit disruptions or disturbances to neighbouring businesses.

The culvert was initially lined with a concrete mattress which has deteriorated. As a result, the unlined earth is progressively eroding, undermining dividing fences and impacting the hardstand and carpark areas of adjacent businesses.
Records exist of resident complaints of parking and adjoining lots ‘overflowing’, indicating that flows may escape the channel during severe storm events, particularly where the cross-sectional area reduces at locations of rock infill and at meanders.
Project timeline
Design works for these rehabilitation works started in March 2022 and were completed in June 2023. Construction works is expected to commence in 2026, pending contractor availability and weather and site conditions.
We will communicate with residents and businesses before works begin with further details, including timing and what you can expect.

Project features
The rehabilitation works will include the following:
- A reinforced concrete channel lining including fence replacement where required.
- An improved drainage outlet structure on the upstream end of the channel.
- Pedestrian fencing adjacent to the Parramatta Road footpath to limit access for pedestrians.
- Removal of vegetation, where required.
- Carry out restoration activities, where required.
Project benefits
The rehabilitation project works means the channel will be protected from eroding. The fencing and carpark areas of adjacent businesses will be enhanced. In addition, the rehabilitation works will minimise storm water from escaping the channel during severe storm events.
Pedestrian Fencing will also to be installed to increase safety by preventing public access into the channel.
Project impacts
- Temporary fencing for property to allow easement into the channel.
- Changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits, during works on either ends of the channel.
- Increased noise and vibration.
- Resumption of a portion of land along the channel to ease stormwater flow.
- Temporary footpath closures.
