Breeding and approvals

Breeding dogs

Deciding to breed is a big decision. You must meet strict criteria under our Local Laws and also State Legislation.

To breed your dog in the City of Logan, you must meet strict criteria under our local laws and state legislation.

Breeding requirements

All dogs in Queensland must be registered and microchipped. The Queensland Government introduced laws to promote the responsible breeding of dogs.

As a dog breeder you must have a unique breeder identification number (BIN) also known as a supply number. This number can trace any puppies back to you as the breeder. You must display your BIN or supply number when advertising, selling or giving away a puppy or dog. To apply for a supply number, please visit Queensland Government dog breeders’ register. Your supply number will only be current for 12 months.

In Logan, you must also be a prefix (breeder) member of a recognised association. Currently Dogs Queensland is Councils only recognised association. Your membership with this association must remain current and be renewed every 12 months. You must adhere to the rules and codes of conduct (however named) of the recognised association.

Breeding standards and guidelines

A dog breeder is anyone that owns a dog that has a litter, including an unplanned or accidental litter. Queensland Governments dog breeding standards and guidelines detail the essential care requirements you will need to provide for your dog and its litter. If you breed dogs in Queensland, you must comply with these standards.

What if I don’t meet these requirements?

If you do not meet these requirements and your female dog has bred on one or more occasions, she will need to be desexed.

You can report any concerns about puppy breeding to Queensland dog breeders’ register.
