It's time to smell the roses and put on the gardening gloves for the 2009 Logan Garden Showcase.

Enter the popular Logan Garden Competition and attend one or all of the fabulous events, activities and workshops occurring across Logan to assist you in beautifying your garden.

Garden Competition Categories

Residential Categories:
The garden may include shrubs, bedding plants and trees to create an attractive garden.

  • Best Small Residential
    Open to homes, townhouses and units up to 650 sqm 
  • Best Small Residential - new entrant
    Up to 650 sqm 
  • Best Medium Residential
    Between 650 - 1200 sqm
  • Best Medium Residential - new entrant
    Between 650 - 1200 sqm
  • Best Large Residential
    Over 1200 sqm
  • Best Large Residential - new entrant 
    Over 1200 sqm

Grand Champion Garden
Best of Residential Category

Best Rental Property
Open to all rental homes townhouses and units.
 
Best Patio/Courtyard
Open to houses, townhouses and units.

Best School/Community/Childcare Centre
Open to schools, community groups, community centres and childcare centres. Garden may include shrubs, bedding plants and trees to create an attractive garden. They may also consist of edible and sustainable plants.

Best Commercial or Industrial
Any business or commercial premises that have a garden or have decorated the premises with floral displays/shrubs/trees.

Best Street and/or Neighbourhood
A minimum of two properties within the street or complex must enter to be eligible in this category. Judging will be front garden only and may include shrubs, bedding plants and trees to create an attractive garden.

Best Edible Garden
Judges will be looking for the garden that comprises fruit and/or vegetables. 

Best Native Garden
Garden that consists of Australian native bushes and trees.

Prizes

Prizes and trophies will be presented by the Mayor and sponsors at the award ceremony on Sunday 25 October.

Conditions of entry

Entry is free and only available to residents and community organisations within Logan City boundaries.

Entrants must be over the age of 18 as of 1 August 2009.

All entrants allow the organisers to publicise their name, address and in the print and electronic media including flyers and promotional materials.

The judge/s reserve the right to withhold the prize if there are insufficient entries in the category.

The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Times and dates of judging will be at the discretion of the judges.

Entrants need to consider the impact of their entry may have on the  safety of vehicular and pedestrian traffic and must plan to ensure that any risks are minimised.

The organisers and sponsors accept no responsibility for damage, injury or theft which may occur as a result of your entry into this project.

Failure to comply with the terms and conditions of entry may lead to immediate cancellation of an entry and withdrawal of prizes.

Entrants allow garden to be viewed by the public and photographed

Entrants grant the Judges permission to enter their property for garden judging.

Activities to grow and show your garden

Free garden bus tours
Hop on a bus and enjoy a tour of the beautiful gardens that are entered in the garden competition. Buses will be touring on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 October and depart from the Logan Entertainment Centre at 10 am and 2 pm.  For bookings please contact Sue Connelly on 3290 0088 between 9 am and 2 pm weekdays.

National Tree Day - Sunday 2 August
Celebrate National Tree Day by planting a tree at Alexander Clark Park, Eagleby Wetlands and Spring Mountain Reserve - visit www.treeday.planetark.com for more details.

Bushcare
Become a Bushcare volunteer and work in Council bushland parks to restore bushland and/or help to propagate indigenous plants to be used in bush restoration projects.

Register your interest or find out more information on Logan’s Community Bushcare activities, by phoning Council’s Bushcare Officer on 3412 5338 or emailing at council@logan.qld.gov.au.

Land for Wildlife
Join the land for Wildlife program and assist in caring for a range of native plants and animals and provide key links to other bushland areas. If you would like to apply for Land for Wildlife registration for your property email council@logan.qld.gov.au with your name, address and contact details or contact the Land for Wildlife Extension Officer on 3412 5312.

Free Gardening Workshops With Annette McFarlane

Organic gardening
Are you keen to learn the secrets of compost making? Would you like to put worms to work in your garden? Are you plagued by pests and looking for organic control options? Annette McFarlane will reveal the secrets to successful organic gardening in this practical workshop. Bring along plant samples for diagnosis and be prepared to get your hands dirty and learn by doing.

Growing Plants from Seeds and Cuttings
Would you like to save seeds for replanting? Have you tried growing plants from seed, but been unsuccessful? Are you aware how easily some plants can be grown from cuttings. Join Annette McFarlane for a practical workshop on growing plants from seeds and cuttings and learn techniques that are guaranteed to improve your propagation success. Be prepared to take part in some hands on learning.

Join a garden club

Garden clubs in Logan offer you an enjoyable way to learn about gardening and meet people with the same interests. Garden clubs have regular meetings, bus trips, guest speakers, competitions, floral displays, plant sales with morning tea and lots of fun. Call your local gardening club to see how you can get involved.
