Look out Logan, there will be plenty more entertainment in store soon.
Construction of the extension to the Logan Entertainment Centre (LEC) is about to commence in the first upgrade of its kind since the LEC opened in July 2002.
Health, Sport and Community Services Chairperson, Councillor Phil Pidgeon (Division 9), said Council's decision to extend the LEC was underpinned by the widespread community support and escalating market demand.
"In the past two years, LEC has seen record numbers with up to 76 concerts in one year, 304 events in the same year and more than 87,000 guests through the doors," he said.
"The renovation will include new back-of-house facilities, and upgrades to the food and beverage, and hospitality facilities.
"The back-of-house facilities will see the inclusion of change rooms including a VIP dressing room, a green room and extended entrance and corridor area."
Cr Pidgeon said the upgraded features would enable greater access to social and cultural facilities for community members.
Cr Pidgeon said 100 part-time jobs (equivalent to 30 full time positions) had been created to undertake the extension and a further 20 part-time positions would be created to run the centre's new facilities.
The project will cost just under $4 million with the Australian Government contributing $2.855 million and Council providing $1.144 million.
Each year the LEC hosts a variety of events ranging from theatre shows and concerts through to exhibitions, school productions, markets and award dinners.
The extension is expected to be completed by June 2010.
