Light up your street and spread the Christmas joy

Monday, November 02, 2009

1The shops are starting to show the telltale signs - Christmas is quickly approaching.

And that means it is time to get out the ladder and lights and start decorating your house with Christmas cheer.

Logan City Council, the Logan West Leader, and McDonald's Restaurants have teamed up again this year for the 2009 Logan Christmas Lights Competition.

Entry into the popular competition is free with a range of categories available to residents.

Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker, encouraged residents young and old to get into the Christmas spirit and share the joy of the festive season with a colourful lights display.

''Christmas is a truly special time of the year - it is a time to reflect on the year that has past and share quality time with loved ones,'' she said.

''And to me, the simple act of putting up lights not only brings a lot of cheer and joy to yourself, but also to all of those that see your home.

''The 2009 Logan Christmas Lights Competition is a great way to get into the Christmas spirit and brighten your neighbourhood at the same time. I would love to see lights adorning every house and street in Logan.''

This year's 2009 Logan Christmas Lights Competition Best Residential Display category is divided into four zones: Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 3, and Zone 4.  ''Best in Logan'' Awards will also be presented to the Citywide Best Residential Display and Citywide Best Neighbourhood Display.

Prize money of $400 is up for grabs for the first placegetter in the each of the zonal categories while the minor placings receive $200 and $100 respectively.

The Citywide Best Residential Display winner receives $500 and the Citywide Neighbourhood Display receives $500 to donate to the entrant's nominated charity.

In addition to the cash prize, category winners will also receive a professionally framed photograph of their winning display.

Entry forms are available for collection from any McDonald's Restaurant in Logan, Council's Administration Centre at 150 Wembley Rd, Logan Central, and all Logan City Council libraries.

Entries close at noon on Wednesday 2 December.

''All entries will be judged by a four-member panel between December 9 and 13,'' Cr Parker said.

''Judges will take into consideration the first impression created by the display, creativity, use of colour, special effects, Christmas theme and consideration of the environment with the use of energy efficient appliances.

''We had some truly magnificent displays last year and I am confident we will seem them all out in force again this year.''

Winners will be announced and presented with their prizes and trophies by Cr Parker at the Logan City Christmas Carols on Friday 18 December.

A list of all entrants will be published in the Logan West Leader on Wednesday 16 December with the winners announced in the Leader on Wednesday 23 December.
